Nod Your Head Up and Down … and Make Yourself Happy

The cervical portion of the human spine is comprised of seven boney segments, typically referred to as C1 to C7, with cartilaginous discs between each vertebral body. This is our neck and it supports the weight of our head while also protecting the nerves which carry sensory and motor information from the brain down to the rest of the body. The neck is highly flexible and allows the head to turn and flex in all directions.

Let’s look a little more closely at the first two vertebrae, C1 and C2 respectively. These two vertebrae have the very important task of connecting our skull to our spine. It is interesting to note that C1, otherwise known as “atlas” which holds up the head (our “globe’) has no body. It is doughnut-shaped with two arches that allow for the second vertebra, C2, also known as “axis,” to create the pivot upon which it nods and rotates. These two vertebra are important because of their connection to the brainstem. Trillions of nerve fibers from the brainstem travel through the opening in the atlas and flow down into the spinal column. Because the opening through the atlas is so small, any movement out of position, even a fraction of a degree, can restrict the nerves and distort the messages traveling from the brain to the different parts of the body. What results is body imbalance, improper nerve function, disease, and pain.

When the atlas is out of whack it is like driving a car that is misaligned. You can replace the tires but they will wear out at a faster rate. Same thing is true with the human body. You can take medication but unless the alignment of the atlas is corrected, the condition will not go away. In order for the organs and cells of the body to function well they must receive uninterrupted signals from the brain. The pathway of the nervous system within the spine is critical to your well-being and it starts from the top, from that little fellow holding up your brain.

Is there a way of naturally realigning our atlas and axis? Yes, there is! It’s called “saying yes with your head.” Nodding the head up and down to indicate “yes” is a sign in most cultures of agreement, acceptance and acknowledgement. In seeking an origin for this movement we need look no further than babies who, when hungry, search for their mother’s milk by moving their heads vertically. Babies grow into adults and don’t need their mother’s milk. But the restorative function of nodding doesn’t go away. Not only does it correct and stimulate energy flow from the brain through the spine all through the body, it particularly addresses certain organs, like the eyes, for instance.

Try this out as an exercise. Shake your head side to side (“no”) and sense whether you can see clearly. Can you? It’s difficult, isn’t it? Now, nod your head up and down (“yes”). How do you see? It’s different, right? You can focus at times and see clearly. Did you know that it’s a proven fact when you nod your head up and down at least 100 times a day, looking up at the ceiling and down at your toes, your vision will improve? You are strengthening the muscles in your neck and increasing blood circulation to the head and eyes. The stimulation from the neck also travels down the spine awakening each vertebra in its journey. Better vision, energized spine, happy human. And all from nodding up and down and saying “yes.”

  1. Thank you ! I’m going to try this exercise a 100 times and hope it relieves the neck pain I’ve had for months now. I can’t turn side to side but I can do the yes nod. Will it help to relieve the muscle spasm that’s preventing me from turning side to side?

  3. Do you do all 100 exercises at the same time or space them out throughout the day?
    Should you stand or sit when you do the exercises?
    Should you keep your eyes open or closed during the exercises?
    What does it mean if you get real dizzy if you don’t close your eyes while doing this exercise?

  4. Thank you SO much. I just read your article and tried the technique for 5 minutes and I feel better already. I have always had chiropractic care and recently I had a fall, and ever since my atlas is out.
    I feel dizzy and my vision is off and I have felt nauseous. I already feel a bit better. Will use this and go see my chiropractor as well. Much appreciated. 🙂 D~

  5. Thank you, I have had misalignment of axis for years. Tried many things, but it refused to go into place, off to the right. Doing this exercise has improved my neck. If it will eventually get C2 in place remains to be seen, but it has helped my neck.

  6. I tried method and is working wonders. Normally when I wake up in the morning I feel dizzy and in a state of confusion. But after having tried this method. My head was so light and I was clear in my head not tired or in a state of confusion anymore. I hope this will last forever

  7. I will nod my head up and down as you say and pray it will help my Atlas and Axis. Numbness in my fingers every morning, I think it is a pinched nerve in my neck. Lots of other issues with my body and thinking it might be from C1 and C2.

  8. This exercise will help prevent Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. It is one of the few exercises that will prevent forward shoulder posture that doesn’t increase pain levels in patients with nerve impingement.

  9. Wow! This feels great! I normally do the move head to right and left and up and down, but only five times each direction. Doing this one hundred times – I can feel the kundalini moving in my spine! It’s like this movement awakened the the sacred serpent! Wow! Thank you for this. Not only do I have more energy running up and down my spine, because of this I feel more energized. My neck joints feel lubricated for the first time ever! Wow!
