Focusing on Wellness While Working From Home

Thankfully, glasses aren’t the only way you can look after your precious peepers. The other things you can do are:

  • Work in an environment with lots of natural light
  • Follow the 20–20–20 rule, which means looking at something 20 feet away, for 20 seconds, every 20 minutes.
  • Change the color temperature on your screens to swap the blue hues for warmer tones.

Healthy Snacks Are A Must

If you thought office life was full of snacks, you haven’t seen anything yet because there’s very little to stop you from wandering into the kitchen and helping yourself to another armful of snacks. As Oscar Wilde famously said, “We can resist everything but temptation” — and the temptation to gorge on this and that while we work can be too much to resist. But there are ways to keep this side of working from home in check.

First of all, stop packing your kitchen full of sweet treats, or ask your housemates or significant other to hide them. Secondly, replace your junk food (which does nothing for energy levels or brain power) with nutritionally awesome snacks, fresh fruits, and wholesome foods. It’s just a matter of habit, so get out of the habit of buying candy and get into the habit of snacking on nuts, blueberries, pumpkin seeds and anything else that has less sugar and more fibers, proteins, and antioxidants.

Stand Up Every Hour and (Safely) Go Outside Every Day

You’ll be amazed at how quickly you become comfortable with your new work from home setup, but for all of the beneficial points to be made, there are some very obvious downsides too — and getting stuck in your seat is one of them. When your walk to work simply involves climbing the stairs or strolling over to the corner of the room, you are achieving a lot less movement, which has negative consequences for both your mental and physical well-being.

The way to counter this is to simply set a timer on your phone as a reminder to press pause and get up once every hour. Stand up, stretch, dance, pull a yoga pose — anything that gets your body moving again. Make sure you (safely) get outside too, even if it’s just to walk around the block, do a couple of laps of your garden or head to the park with a fresh coffee where you can soak up the sunshine and fresh air. We all need it, especially when working from home.

Get Showered, Get Dressed

There are a lot of people who think working from home means working from the couch in a pair of sweats and an old T-shirt that’s permanently stained with leftover pasta sauce. Don’t be that kind of person because it’s not good for your productivity, and it’s really bad for your mental well-being. In fact, according to a study, people tend to adopt the characteristics they associate with what they’re wearing. That’s the influence our attire has over our mental energy.

So instead of staying in your pajamas (and then sticking to them for five days in a row), kickstart your day by getting ready as if you were going to work at your dream job. Have a shower and then choose an outfit you’d wear to the office. Not only will you feel like a boss when you take the inevitable gram selfie, but you’ll find you’re way more productive and ready for the day ahead.
